GIF Compressor is a free online tool that makes animated GIFs smaller, right in your browser. No uploads, no sign-up, no watermarks and no ads.
Our mission
We want shrinking a GIF to be fast, private and simple: drop in a file, get a smaller GIF that still looks good, and fits wherever you need to share it, whether that is a Slack or Discord emoji, a Discord sticker, an email or a web page.
Why we built it
Many online GIF compressors ask you to upload your files to their servers, cover the page in ads, or limit file size and the number of files. That is slow, and it means handing your images to someone else. We built GIF Compressor because modern browsers are powerful enough to do the whole job on your own device.
Privacy first
Every GIF is processed locally in your browser using Web Workers. Your files are never uploaded, so we never see them. The site runs no ads and currently uses no analytics. Read more in our Privacy Policy.
How it works
- Decode: your GIF is read and its frames are decoded in the browser.
- Optimize: colors are reduced with a high-quality quantizer, optional lossy compression and dithering are applied, and you can drop frames, change speed, resize, or set the loop.
- Re-encode: the frames are encoded into a new, smaller GIF. Pick a preset (Balanced, Smallest, High quality or Lossless) or a target size such as 128 KB for a Slack emoji, 256 KB for a Discord emoji, 512 KB for a Discord sticker, 2 MB for email or 20 MB for Discord, and the tool adjusts the settings to fit, if needed resizing the GIF.
- Compare and download: check the animated before/after preview, then download a single GIF, or all results at once as a ZIP. If a result would be larger than your original, the original is kept.
You can process many files at once (up to 200 MB per file) by choosing files, dropping a whole folder, or pasting. Try it on the GIF Compressor or use the GIF Size Reducer to hit an exact file size.
Built on open source
GIF Compressor uses our own GIF engine together with the MIT-licensed libraries gifuct-js, gifenc and fflate. Details are in our Legal Notice and Terms of Use.
